I Don't Drive a Car. I Manage Risk.

Every second behind the wheel, my mind is running a loop:

What's happening 200 meters ahead?
What's the car beside me about to do?
What's in my rearview mirror?
Where's my escape route if something goes wrong right now?
What's the worst thing that could happen in the next 5 seconds — and am I positioned to survive it?

This isn't paranoia. It's a mindset. Most drivers react to events. I anticipate them.

The Three Principles I Live By

1. Always know what your car is doing, and what every car around you is about to do.

You'd be amazed how many drivers don't know either. They drive on autopilot. Autopilot crashes.

2. Look one step further than feels necessary.

One more car ahead. One more mirror check. One more glance at the intersection. That extra step is where accidents are caught before they happen.

3. Respect the machine.

A car is a two-ton metal object moving at lethal speed. The moment you forget that — the moment you get comfortable — is the moment it can kill you. Or you can kill someone else.

These Habits Compound

Alone, each one prevents maybe one incident. Together, over 15 years, they've prevented every incident. I'm not special. I don't have faster reflexes than you. I just built a system, stuck to it, and kept refining it every time I learned something new.

The system works. It kept me alive. It'll keep you alive too.

The Unexpected Side Effect
