Three Near-Misses That Changed How I Drive

Near-Miss #1: The 5-Meter Gap That Saved Me

Provincial highway. Heavy traffic. Three cars ahead, all bumper-to-bumper at maybe 2 meters apart. I was fourth in line, maintaining my usual 5-6 meter gap.

Without warning, the three cars ahead crashed in a chain reaction. Hard stop. Total chaos.

My gap — those extra 3-4 meters — gave me just enough room to brake. I still had to swerve partially into the oncoming lane (which happened to be clear) to avoid the pileup. But I stopped. The cars ahead didn't.

What I learned: The gap isn't about comfort. It's about physics. Those 5-6 meters were the difference between "near-miss" and "four-car pileup." Every time you close the gap to save a few seconds, you're betting your life that the car ahead won't stop suddenly. I won my bet that day. The three cars ahead lost theirs.
