Reading the Car Ahead: The Lane-Drift Signal

When a car starts drifting noticeably off their lane center — even slightly — they're about to change lanes. They may not signal. They may not even check their mirror. But their car is already telling you.

What to watch:

• Front wheels touching or crossing the lane line, even briefly
• Subtle acceleration followed by drift toward your lane
• Brake lights followed by a shift toward a gap
• Repeated glances at their side mirror (you can sometimes see their head turn)

The rule: If they've drifted off center by more than half a tire width, they're making a move. Anticipate it. Don't wait for the signal.

The Anti-Cutting-Off Technique

This is the skill I'm asked about most. How do you prevent aggressive drivers from cutting into your lane in heavy traffic?

Step 1: Hug the threat side.

If someone is trying to cut in from your left, position your car as close to the left lane line as safely possible. Right side threat? Hug the right line. This shrinks the gap they're targeting.

Step 2: Control the following distance.

Keep just enough space to the car ahead. Not too much (invites cutting), not too little (no reaction time). The sweet spot is a gap that's too small for them to squeeze into but large enough for you to brake safely.
